Social Media & P.R.

Social media is important for public relations in many ways. One was is that you can use social media to reach a large number of people in a very short amount of time. I’m sure many of us have heard the saying, “You pay for advertising and you pray for P.R.” This is where social media helps public relations tremendously. Social media for the most part is free and this helps business reach a large audience without paying a lot of money for advertising.  Social media lets you promote, and grow brand awareness, but you also can learn a lot from it too. You can learn what types of consumers are interested in your company and the consumers that are not. This is really important, because you can learn how to reach several different types of audiences. Another thing you can learn is how people feel about you, your brand/company, and your product. This can be a good thing and a bad thing. People’s opinions on social media can damage a reputation or help one. However, as a P.R. person you can take negative comments and learn from them to improve whatever it is.

Social media can be used effectively in public relations campaign in many ways. It can create free brand awareness for a company and also help promote sales and advertising for free. Social media can also with event planning, because you can invite a large number of people to an event that help raise attendance rate. Social media can be used also for helping nonprofits and supporting a cause. If a person is very passionate about something they will promote and it will get other people involves and could start a social media movement.

I definitely plan on keeping my twitter account after this class. One reason is because; I had it before I took this course. Another reason is because, is because I follow several companies I am interested in and I like to see what that company is involved in. Twitter also helps me stay connected with classmates and friends that I can share things with.

Social Media Movements- Blog 3

I have not joined a cause via a social medium before. The reason why is because there really has not been anything I felt the need to join. I am not a confrontational person at all, which is the reason I am not into politics and such. However, if there is something I am very passionate about then I would probably join in a movement on social media. In my opinion social media movements represent the spiral of silence theory. Only the two opposing opinions matters and the person in the middle remains quiet. I usually represent the middle man and it is usually why I don’t join movements. I think it is great when people think so passionate about something, that they want their opinion and support to be known. I am just the type of person that sees both sides and is usually in between.

For someone to start a movement through social media they have to be very passionate about the cause they are starting the movement for. Another reason is because they feel their opinion is not being heard. Starting a movement would get other people to help support their opinion and get heard. Another reason could be they are trying to solve and issue or something they do not agree with. With them getting people involved and starting a movement might help fix the issue.

I think organizations can benefit from using social media movements especially for causes that support their organization. I think nonprofits could benefit from this more so than agencies and corporations. Since nonprofit does not have the money for extra things, this would be a free way they could get publicity and brand awareness. Nonprofits also work to support a cause. Creating a movement through social media would just help their cause the nonprofit is supporting.

Social Media Oops -Blog 2

I think Shutterfly apologized in an appropriate amount of time. Reacting to the issue in time is very important. Personally I would have sent out and apology email as soon as I found out that day. I think they handled the situation the best they could. Everyone makes mistakes and the only thing they really can do is apologize at this point, because they can’t change what happened. Shutterfly needs to be more cautious of what they send out and who they send it to, to prevent this from happening again. I really wouldn’t do anything different in handling the situation I would just have acted faster.

I think Shutterfly did handle the situation in a professional, timely manner. Taking responsibility for their action is important instead of putting the blame on someone or something else. They also said they understood why the email would offend people and they apologized for that. I think it is important for a company to not just apologize but to understand why they are apologetic and that they are sincere about it. Even though the company apologized, some people are still going to be offend, such as the lady with the miscarriage. Shutterfly probably lost her as a customer because this mistake effected her in an emotional way. However, their were some customers that did just have a child and the congratulations they got were appreciated. When crisis like this happen it affects customers differently, but handling it in a professional and sincere matter is important to all customers.

Television Shows Using Social Media PRCA 3334 Blog Post 1

Television shows using social media to connect with fans is brilliant. One reason is because it gets fans to watch the show live. If you are a fan and you wait to watch the show after it has already came on you have a chance of finding out what happened through social media. It is a way to encourage fans to watch the show live. Another reason it is brilliant, because it gets the fans actively engaged. Fans are watching the shows closely and are building relationships with other fans of the show. It is a great tool for communication and almost sets up some kind of group or society of fans for the show. The last reason is recruiting more viewers and followers. When a fan is watching the show and sees all the hash tags it grabs their attention and makes them curious. This curiosity leads them to following the show on social media websites and also maybe the characters that play in these shows. The same idea applies to social media. When someone is on social media and their news feed is full of hash tags and post about a certain show, it will also make them want to check out the show themselves. This creates a higher rating for the show and network.

I engage in this type of activity with the show “Pretty Little Liars”. I usually live tweet during the show and I really enjoy it. I like it because you as a fan can connect with so many people that also share a similar interest than you. You can communicate with other fans about this show you enjoy and feel somewhat like you are part of a group. You can also communicate with the celebrities from the show. I personally have never tweeted to a celebrity before, I usually do more reading than tweeting.

I follow several celebrities on social media sites, however I only follow the celebrities that interest me. I do not follow celebrities just because they are famous, I follow them because I like what type of person they portray in the media. For example I follow Peyton Manning on everything. He is not only my favorite football player, but I also like the things he does outside of sports and the type of person he is. I also follow Steve Martin because he is one of my favorite actors. When I follow celebrities it is because I want to be actively engaged in what they are doing, not because they dramatic or controversial post.

Great Blogs to Follow for Any P.R. Person

The Question of Meaningless Data helped me understand many things I did not know about data and technology. The author of the blog, Danny Brown, writes about how difficult it is to find the answers to our questions in a search engine due to all the unwanted data. Brown also takes another side to his story by saying the unwanted data sometimes can be beneficial in helping us solve other problems or questions. The blog is something that many search engine users can relate to. I enjoyed the technology and marketing aspect of his blogs because it is great information to know as a public Relations major.

Mashable.com is great for anyone promoting or marketing a product. The website shares several blogs on products from different angles. As a public relations person this website would be very useful to see how your company and product is doing. Mashable.com can help businesses learn from others mistakes and what the new upcoming products are that they will compete with. This website is very resourceful to any business.

Spin Sucks by Gini Deitrich is very resourceful for any one in the field of public relations. This blog contains helpful tips such as business, writing, social media, marketing, and communication. The blog covers everything a P.R. person needs and more. I feel this blog will help me in my first job in the public relations field.

Current Campaign Blog

This is truly inspiring to me. I recently have been asked by my best friend to advertise for her new cheerleading and gymnastics gym. I have been battling with myself whether or not I should help her because of school and work. With the experience you have provided, it has encouraged me to help her. I really enjoy that you liked your experience working with P.R. and I hope I have the same positive outcome.

We All Just Need to be Popular

I completely agree with your feelings towards the guest speakers. The two guest speakers about crisis management made me want to reconsider going to school for P.R. They were very negative about their and only informed us about the task they did not like doing. If they were the first people I talked to about taking a career in P.R. I would probably run. I am also glad we had the other guest speaker to bring a more positive light to the P.R. field. She also inspired me as well when she said that her job always changes. I too do not like doing the same things day in and day out. I could not agree more with your post.

Topic of Week 4

I am really jealous of that you got the opportunity to work in a business doing P.R. work. I have been looking for several jobs like to work while going to school but they just do not exist in the little town of Statesboro. It was also very smart of you to take public speaking twice. I feel like all P.R. majors should have to take public speaking more than once because many of us took it our freshmen year which was long ago. Choosing marketing as your minor will better prepare you for your jobs in the future. I am currently working on business cards for companies and web pages to build my portfolio. You should also start working on a portfolio for when you apply for job so you can show them what you are capable of doing.

Benefits of P.R.

I completely agree that other majors should take a P.R. course. The course would benefit them by learning how to communicate with different types of people which will be handy to use in the work place. I also agree with you on the organizational skills, because that will help at work and home. I know I feel more prepared and confident to apply for jobs since taking the Introduction to human communications and P.R. I really liked how you explained the importance of the class and how it can be used to benefit in many categories.

Promoting Diversity

I think it is so great that your apartment complex wants its residents to interact with each other. I wish the neighborhood that I live in did the same thing.  I like the P.R. methods that the University Village office employees used to reach their residents. Even though I am a girl, I will agree that I probably wouldn’t have attended if I knew “The Notebook” was the movie of choice. I think it is also very neat that you met a diverse group of people and a girl. This inspired me to create an event for my neighborhood so I also can meet and learn about the people I see on a regular basis.

P.R. in Mass Media

I really liked the argument you created between P.R. and publicity.  I agree that people need to educate themselves on the difference. Several people have negatively responded to me when I tell them I am a P.R. major because they assume it is publicity and relate it to the paparazzi and tabloids. I am so glad that you explained the differences because now I can use this information to better explain to people, when they give me dirty looks about my major. I also like that you included the work load of a P.R. verses the work load for publicity because it clearly shows how much harder we work.
